When someone you care about is having surgery, it is natural to feel a mixture of concern, hope, and uncertainty.
Even when the procedure is planned, the waiting can be difficult.
You may find yourself thinking about the surgeon, the anesthesia, the procedure itself, and what recovery will look like afterward.
You may also wonder what to say when the person you love is afraid.
Prayer gives you a way to bring those concerns before God.
You can pray for the person undergoing surgery, the hands and minds of the medical team, the decisions surrounding their care, and the recovery that follows.
You can also pray for your own heart as you wait.
These prayers are designed for different moments surrounding surgery. Use them when you are praying alone, with your loved one, or with other family members.

Give my loved one peace as they prepare. When fear comes, remind them that they can bring every concern to You. Watch over them throughout the operation and give the medical team wisdom if anything unexpected occurs.
Be with our family while we wait. Give us patience, courage, and the ability to support one another. After surgery, guide the recovery process and give my loved one strength for each day ahead. We trust You with what we cannot control. Amen.
Entrusting the Surgery and the Waiting to God
Surgery can make you painfully aware of how much is outside your control. You can ask questions, support your loved one, follow medical guidance, and pray faithfully, but you cannot personally direct every moment of the procedure.
That can be frightening.
Prayer does not require you to deny those feelings. You can tell God that you are afraid. You can ask Him for healing while acknowledging that you do not know exactly what the outcome will be.
You can also pray for the medical professionals caring for your loved one and seek to understand the medical information being provided.
“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” — Psalm 62:8, NIV
If someone you love is having surgery, take the day one step at a time. Pray before the procedure. Pray while you wait. Pray when the doctor gives an update. Pray during recovery.
And when you run out of words, remember that you can simply bring your loved one’s name before God and entrust them to Him.
