31 Thoughtful Prayers for My Children to Make Good Decisions

I have learned that parenting becomes more complicated as children become more independent.

When they are young, many decisions are made for them.

As they grow, those choices gradually become their own, and I cannot always be present to explain what I think they should do.

That is one reason I care so deeply about my children’s ability to make good decisions.

I do not expect them to make perfect choices. They will make mistakes, change their minds, misunderstand situations, and occasionally learn lessons the hard way.

What I want is for them to develop the judgment to pause, think, seek wisdom, consider consequences, and choose what is right.

Good decision-making is needed everywhere.

It matters when my children choose friends, respond to pressure, handle money, approach school, use technology, think about relationships, and eventually make decisions about work and family.

I also have to remember that good decisions are not always the easiest ones. A wise choice may require patience, courage, sacrifice, or the willingness to disappoint other people.

So I pray that my children will not simply ask, “What do I want?” but learn to ask, “What is wise? What is right? What are the consequences? Does this honor God?”

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault” (NIV).

That is a promise I want my children to understand for themselves as they grow.

31. A Prayer for My Children’s Decisions to Honor God

Lord, shape the way my children make decisions throughout their lives. When they face choices I cannot see coming, give them wisdom to consider what is true, good, responsible, and pleasing to You. Remind them to seek counsel when they need it, examine consequences honestly, and resist pressure that would pull them away from their convictions. I know I cannot make every decision for them, so prepare them for the responsibility that will eventually be theirs. Give them clear minds, teachable hearts, and the courage to choose wisely. May their decisions reflect growing maturity and a sincere desire to live in a way that honors You.

Giving My Children Room to Become Wise

One of the hardest things I have discovered as a parent is that protecting my children from every bad decision would actually prevent them from learning how to make decisions for themselves.

There are moments when I want to step in immediately. I want to give the answer, remove the difficulty, or prevent the disappointment before it happens.

But children eventually become adults.

They will face decisions when I am not in the room. They will have to judge situations I know nothing about. They will encounter people I have never met and opportunities I cannot evaluate for them.

That is why I want to teach them how to think, not simply tell them what to choose.

I want my children to understand the importance of seeking wisdom, listening to trustworthy counsel, considering consequences, checking their motives, and praying before major decisions. I also want them to know that asking for help is not a sign of weakness.

My own example matters here.

If I expect my children to think carefully, I need to show them what thoughtful decision-making looks like. If I want them to admit mistakes, I need to admit mine. If I want them to seek God when they are uncertain, they need to see me doing the same.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (NIV).

That does not mean my children will never make a wrong choice. It means I can teach them where to turn when they need wisdom.

My prayer is that, as they grow, they will become increasingly thoughtful and responsible decision-makers. I want them to have the courage to reject what is harmful, the humility to receive good advice, and the maturity to accept responsibility when they get something wrong.

I will not always be able to choose for them.

But I can prepare them to choose wisely.

And I can continue asking God to guide them through every decision I can see and every one I cannot.
