Jacob had spent two decades working for his uncle Laban. Though Jacob entered Haran empty-handed, God had multiplied him with wives, children, livestock, and favor. But Laban—consistently manipulative and self-serving—viewed Jacob’s increase not as a blessing but a threat.
The previous verses indicate that Jacob perceived a shift in Laban’s sons and in Laban himself. The once transactional relationship was now poisoned by envy. In this climate, God speaks to Jacob, telling him it is time to return to his homeland.
Jacob explains to his wives that though Laban tried to harm him financially and relationally, he has seen God’s constant companionship. This confession becomes both a rationale for his departure and a testament to God’s covenantal faithfulness.

“With all my power, I have served your father.”

Ten here is symbolic of repetition and fullness. Jacob endured ongoing exploitation. Each wage change likely favored Laban. Yet Jacob did not retaliate—he trusted God’s justice.

This is the ultimate declaration: God put limits on Laban. Divine intervention stopped human harm. Jacob acknowledges that whatever protection he had didn’t come from Laban’s goodwill but from God’s hand.

Where Jacob’s wages were changed repeatedly, Jesus was traded for thirty pieces of silver. Where Jacob was protected from harm, Jesus chose to absorb harm for the sake of our redemption.
Yet the principle remains: God’s presence does not eliminate injustice but overrules its outcome. Jesus’ victory came through unjust treatment, and yet God exalted Him. Like Jacob, Jesus left one place to fulfill divine purpose in another.
Ultimately, Christ is the greater Jacob—the faithful servant, the rejected one, the protected one, and the one whose journey transforms history.
