Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About God Being In Control
God’s sovereignty doesn’t mean we’re robots with no choices. Scripture consistently presents both divine sovereignty and human responsibility. You make real decisions with real consequences. But somehow, mysteriously, God remains sovereign over everything, including human choices. Joseph’s brothers chose to betray him, and they were responsible for that evil. Yet Joseph later said, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” Human evil and divine sovereignty coexist without contradiction in ways we can’t fully comprehend.
God being in control also doesn’t mean everything that happens is good or that He causes evil. Scripture is clear that God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone. Sin, suffering, and evil exist because we live in a fallen world corrupted by human rebellion. But God is sovereign even over the chaos, working all things together for good for those who love Him. He doesn’t cause the cancer, but He’s sovereign over it. He can heal it, redeem it, or use it for purposes you can’t yet see.
The practical application of God’s sovereignty is peace. When you truly believe God is in control, circumstances lose their power to destroy your peace. The economy might crash, but God still reigns. The diagnosis might be grim, but He sustains all things by His powerful word. The future might look terrifying, but He already knows the end from the beginning. You can release your death grip on control because Someone infinitely more capable is actually in charge.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess that I struggle to trust Your sovereignty. I want control over my life, my circumstances, my future. When things feel chaotic and uncertain, I panic instead of resting in the truth that You reign over everything. Forgive me for trying to be God instead of trusting You as God.
Remind me that Your throne has never been threatened, that Your purposes will stand regardless of how circumstances appear, and that nothing happens outside Your sovereign control. Help me to release my grip on things I can’t control anyway and to trust that You’re working all things together for my good.
When the world feels out of control, anchor me in the truth that You’re still sovereign. When my plans fall apart, help me to remember that Your purpose prevails. When the future terrifies me, remind me that You already inhabit tomorrow and have ordained all my days.
Let Your sovereignty bring peace instead of fatalism. Help me to make wise choices while trusting that You’re ultimately in control of outcomes. Sustain my faith with the reality that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted, that You do as You please in heaven and earth, and that You reign forever.
