Your Bible sits closed on the nightstand, dusty from weeks of neglect. Prayer feels like talking to the ceiling, and worship songs that once moved you to tears now sound like empty noise. You go through the motions of faith while feeling spiritually numb, wondering if God has moved away or if you’ve simply lost the ability to sense His presence. Church services wash over you without impact, and biblical truths that once brought comfort now feel distant and irrelevant.
Spiritual dryness touches every believer’s journey at some point, often arriving without warning and lingering longer than we’d like. It might follow seasons of intense spiritual activity, personal trauma, major life changes, or simply emerge from the natural rhythms of faith. Unlike temporary discouragement, spiritual dryness involves a deeper sense of disconnection from God that can’t be easily fixed with more Bible reading or extra church attendance.
If you’re walking through a season of spiritual drought, you’re not abandoned by God or failing in your faith. Scripture reveals that even the most devoted followers experienced periods of spiritual emptiness, and it offers hope for finding refreshment in the midst of dryness.

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Spiritual Dryness
Scripture reveals that spiritual dryness isn’t a sign of God’s absence or our failure but often a natural part of spiritual growth that can actually deepen our faith. The Bible consistently uses imagery of drought followed by rain, wilderness followed by streams, and winter followed by spring to describe the cyclical nature of spiritual experience.
What strikes me most about biblical teaching on spiritual dryness is how it normalizes these seasons without minimizing their difficulty. The psalmists openly express their spiritual thirst and longing, Jesus himself experienced spiritual desolation on the cross, and even mature believers like Elijah went through periods of spiritual emptiness. Scripture doesn’t promise constant spiritual highs but instead offers hope that God remains present and active even when we can’t sense Him.
The Bible also reveals that spiritual dryness often precedes spiritual breakthrough. Desert seasons strip away superficial aspects of faith and create a deeper hunger for an authentic encounter with God. Like physical drought that drives roots deeper in search of water, spiritual dryness can push us toward more profound dependence on God rather than on spiritual feelings or experiences. Scripture consistently promises that those who wait on the Lord will find renewal and that springs will burst forth in the wilderness.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, I find myself in a season of spiritual drought where You feel distant and my faith feels dry. Prayer seems empty, Your Word feels lifeless, and I struggle to sense Your presence in ways I once did. I confess that this spiritual dryness frightens me and makes me wonder if I’ve done something wrong or if You’ve withdrawn from me.
Help me to remember that You are the same yesterday, today, and forever, even when my feelings suggest otherwise. Remind me that Your love doesn’t depend on my ability to feel it and that Your presence doesn’t require my spiritual awareness to be real. Give me patience to wait through this season without forcing spiritual experiences or giving up on my faith.
Show me what You want to teach me through this time of dryness. Use this wilderness season to deepen my roots, purify my motives, and create genuine hunger for You rather than just spiritual feelings. Help me to continue reading Your Word, praying, and gathering with other believers, even when these practices feel mechanical.
Pour out streams in this wasteland of my heart. Refresh my weary soul with glimpses of Your goodness and faithful reminders of Your character. Let this season of dryness prepare me for a deeper, more authentic relationship with You that doesn’t depend on constant spiritual highs but rests in the solid foundation of Your unchanging love.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
