35 Bible Verses for Marriage

Marriage is nothing like what you thought it would be. The person you couldn’t wait to marry now leaves dishes in the sink, forgets important dates, and has habits that drive you crazy. The effortless romance of dating has been replaced by arguments about money, exhaustion from juggling responsibilities, and the slow realization that you’ve committed your life to someone who is deeply flawed. Some days, you question whether you made the right choice. Other days, you’re just tired of trying so hard to make it work.

Nobody warns you that marriage will expose every selfish tendency you have, that merging two lives means constant negotiation and compromise, or that staying in love requires daily decisions to choose each other when feelings have faded. The world tells you that if marriage is hard, you’re with the wrong person. But the truth is that all marriages are hard because all people are broken, and putting two broken people together guarantees friction. You’re not failing because it’s difficult. You’re just discovering what commitment actually costs.

These verses offer God’s design for marriage, the principles that help it thrive, and the grace needed when you fall short of the ideal.

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Marriage

God designed marriage to be a covenant relationship that reflects Christ’s love for the church, which sets the bar impossibly high if you’re trying to achieve it in your own strength. The biblical picture of marriage isn’t about finding your soulmate who completes you but about two imperfect people committing to love each other sacrificially, to serve each other consistently, and to build something together that honors God. It’s less about compatibility and more about commitment.

What strikes me about Scripture’s teaching on marriage is how counter-cultural it is. Husbands are called to love their wives like Christ loved the church, which means dying to self daily. Wives are called to respect their husbands, which is difficult when he’s being disrespectful. Both are called to submit to one another, to put the other’s needs first, to forgive repeatedly. None of this comes naturally. All of it requires the Holy Spirit’s power and a daily decision to choose covenant over feelings.

The three-strand cord imagery is crucial. When God is the third strand in your marriage, you have strength that doesn’t exist when it’s just two people trying to hold it together. A marriage centered on Christ has resources for forgiveness, grace, patience, and love that go beyond human capacity.

Say This Prayer

Father, marriage is harder than I expected, and I need Your help. I can’t love my spouse the way You’ve called me to in my own strength. I’m selfish, impatient, and quick to focus on what I’m not getting rather than on how I should be giving. Forgive me for the ways I’ve failed to honor my commitment and my spouse. Change my heart and teach me what sacrificial love actually looks like.

Help me to see my spouse the way You see them, not through the lens of disappointment or unmet expectations, but with compassion and grace. When we’re in conflict, give me wisdom to listen well, humility to admit when I’m wrong, and courage to speak truth in love. Teach us both to fight for our marriage instead of against each other. Protect us from the things that would tear us apart.

Remind me that marriage isn’t primarily about my happiness but about reflecting Your love to the world and sanctifying both of us in the process. Help us to build our relationship on You as the foundation, to seek Your will for our marriage, and to prioritize time together. Give us the grace to keep choosing each other even when it’s hard, to forgive quickly, and to love deeply. Make our marriage strong and full of joy.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
