The Bible consistently presents material abundance as a blessing from God that comes with increased responsibility rather than just increased privilege. This perspective challenges both the guilt that can accompany sudden wealth and the entitlement that wealth can foster.
What strikes me most about biblical teaching on wealth is how it emphasizes character over accumulation and stewardship over ownership. Scripture repeatedly reminds us that everything belongs to God and that wealthy individuals are essentially managers of resources that ultimately belong to Him. This framework transforms how we view sudden wealth from “mine to do with as I please” to “God’s resources entrusted to me for His purposes.”
The Bible also warns about wealth’s tendency to create false security and distance from God, suggesting that sudden wealth can be as spiritually dangerous as it is financially beneficial. Scripture consistently calls wealthy individuals to radical generosity, intentional humility, and careful attention to their spiritual lives, recognizing that abundance can subtly erode dependence on God and compassion for others. Heavenly Father, I never expected to find myself in this position of sudden wealth, and I’m feeling overwhelmed by both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with this blessing. Help me to remember that this abundance comes from You and belongs to You, and that I’m called to be a faithful steward rather than just a beneficiary.
