You’re sitting in uncomfortable chairs across from a stranger, trying to explain why the person you once couldn’t wait to marry now feels like a roommate at best or an enemy at worst. The decision to seek counselling wasn’t easy. Maybe one of you dragged the other here kicking and screaming, or perhaps you both arrived exhausted from fighting the same battles over and over with no resolution in sight.
Walking into couples therapy can feel like admitting failure, especially in Christian circles where there’s often pressure to have a “perfect” marriage that reflects God’s love. The vulnerability required to let a counselor into your private struggles while your spouse sits three feet away can be terrifying. You might wonder if your marriage is beyond repair, if you’ve damaged things too badly, or if you’re wasting time and money on something that should be fixed through prayer alone.
But seeking help for your marriage isn’t a sign of spiritual weakness or relationship failure. It’s actually an act of courage and investment that mirrors God’s own commitment to restoration and healing. These verses remind us that God is present even in counselling rooms, working through both professional wisdom and divine grace to bring healing to marriages that feel broken beyond repair.

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Marriage Counselling
Scripture doesn’t explicitly mention marriage counselling, but it strongly supports the principles that make counselling effective: honest communication, seeking wise counsel, confession, forgiveness, and commitment to growth. The Bible consistently encourages seeking wisdom from others and acknowledges that marriage requires intentional work rather than just romantic feelings.
What I find remarkable about biblical wisdom on relationships is how it balances grace with truth. Scripture doesn’t minimize the real damage that sin and selfishness cause in marriage, but it also demonstrates God’s heart for restoration and healing. The Bible presents marriage as a covenant relationship that reflects God’s love for His people, which means it’s worth fighting for and investing in professional help when needed.
Biblical marriage counselling isn’t about returning to some idealized past but moving toward the kind of relationship God designed marriage to be. Scripture shows us that healthy marriages require humility, patience, forgiveness, and the willingness to put the other person’s needs ahead of our own. These are exactly the skills that good marriage counsellors help couples develop, making therapy a practical expression of biblical wisdom rather than a compromise of faith.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come to You as a couple in need of healing and restoration. Our marriage feels broken, and we’re seeking help because we don’t know how to fix what’s wrong between us. Thank You for the counselors who offer the wisdom and tools we need to rebuild our relationship on stronger foundations.
Give us humble hearts as we sit in these sessions. Help us to listen without defending, to speak truth without attacking, and to take responsibility for our own contributions to our problems. When our counsellor challenges us or suggests changes that feel uncomfortable, please give us the courage to lean into growth rather than resist it.
Soften our hearts toward each other. Help us remember why we fell in love and chose to make a covenant before You. When we’re tempted to give up or focus only on our spouse’s failures, remind us of Your persistent love for us despite our own shortcomings.
Work through this counselling process to restore trust, improve communication, and deepen our intimacy. Help us to be patient with healing that takes time and to celebrate small victories along the way. Use this difficult season to make our marriage stronger and more reflective of Your love than it was before.
Thank You that You specialize in making beauty from ashes and that no marriage is beyond Your power to restore.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
