The stack of bills on the kitchen table feels like a mountain you’ll never climb. The phone calls from creditors have become a daily soundtrack of shame, and the word “bankruptcy” hangs over your marriage like a dark cloud. What started as manageable debt has spiraled into something that threatens not just your financial security but your relationship itself. You’re exhausted from the sleepless nights, the arguments about money, and the crushing weight of failure.
Bankruptcy feels like admitting defeat, especially when you’ve tried everything else. The shame is overwhelming, particularly if you’ve been taught that financial struggles reflect spiritual failure or lack of faith. You might be wondering if God is punishing you, if your marriage can survive this crisis, or if you’ll ever feel financially secure again. The stress of watching your credit score plummet and losing possessions you worked hard for cuts deep.
These verses won’t pay your bills or immediately restore your credit, but they offer something equally valuable: perspective, hope, and reminders that your worth isn’t determined by your net worth, and God’s love for you remains constant regardless of your financial situation.

Our Thoughts on What the Bible Says About Bankruptcy
Scripture doesn’t view financial failure as moral failure or spiritual weakness. In fact, the Old Testament includes specific provisions for debt forgiveness every seven years, recognizing that sometimes people need a fresh start. This biblical concept is actually one of the foundations of modern bankruptcy law. God understands that economic circumstances can overwhelm even responsible people through no fault of their own.
What strikes me most about biblical financial wisdom is that it consistently separates our identity from our assets. Jesus spent considerable time teaching that life doesn’t consist in the abundance of possessions, and Paul learned contentment in both plenty and want. The Bible never promises that faithful people won’t face financial hardship, but it does promise that God will provide for our needs and work all things together for good.
Bankruptcy isn’t the end of your story; it’s often a new beginning. Many biblical heroes faced complete financial ruin. Job lost everything but was restored. The widow with oil had nothing left but saw God multiply what little remained. Sometimes God uses financial crisis to teach us dependence on Him rather than money, to simplify our lives, or to redirect our priorities toward what truly matters: relationships, character, and eternal values rather than temporal wealth.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, we feel overwhelmed by our financial situation. The debt feels insurmountable, and bankruptcy seems like our only option. We’re embarrassed, scared, and unsure about the future. Help us remember that our worth isn’t determined by our net worth and that You love us regardless of our financial status.
Give us wisdom as we make difficult decisions about our finances. If bankruptcy is the right path, help us walk through it with integrity and hope for a fresh start. Show us how to be good stewards with whatever resources You provide, whether much or little. Help us learn from our mistakes without being crushed by shame.
Strengthen our marriage through this crisis. Don’t let money problems drive a wedge between us. Help us support each other, communicate honestly about our fears, and work together toward solutions. Protect us from bitterness, blame, and despair.
Most importantly, help us trust You to provide for our needs even when we can’t see how. Teach us contentment, gratitude, and the peace that comes from knowing our security is in You, not in our bank account. Give us hope for better days ahead.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
