Communion can feel like an empty ritual when you’re going through the motions without truly engaging with what it represents.
You take the bread, drink the cup, hear the familiar words, and wonder if you’re missing something deeper that other people seem to experience.
Maybe you’re distracted by everything happening in your life, or maybe you’ve participated so many times that the significance has dulled.
You want communion to be meaningful, to connect you to Jesus in a real way, but you’re not sure how to get past the routine to the relationship it’s supposed to signify.
What makes communion challenging is understanding what you’re actually doing.
Is it just symbolic remembrance, or is something more happening?
Should you feel a certain way?
Are you worthy to participate, given your ongoing struggles with sin?
The questions can create either anxiety that keeps you from receiving or apathy that makes participation feel pointless.
You know communion matters, that Jesus commanded it, but translating theological understanding into genuine spiritual encounter feels difficult.
These verses help you grasp what communion means, why Jesus instituted it, and how to participate in ways that honor Him and transform you.

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
New International Version (NIV)

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Communion
Communion is far more than a memorial service or empty ritual. It’s a proclamation of the gospel, a participation in Christ’s death and resurrection, and a physical reminder of spiritual realities.
When Jesus said “this is my body” and “this is my blood,” He was instituting a tangible way for believers to remember, to participate in, and to proclaim His sacrifice.
The bread and cup point backward to what He accomplished on the cross, inward to the need for self-examination, and forward to the coming wedding supper of the Lamb.
What makes communion powerful is that it engages multiple senses and connects physical actions with spiritual truth.
You taste and see that the Lord is good. You participate in something bigger than yourself as you share one bread with other believers, demonstrating the unity of the body of Christ.
The command to examine yourself before partaking isn’t about being perfect but about approaching communion with awareness of sin, genuine repentance, and faith in Christ’s sufficient sacrifice.
The early church devoted itself to the breaking of bread alongside teaching, fellowship, and prayer. Communion wasn’t an occasional add-on but a regular practice that kept the gospel central.
Every time you participate, you’re proclaiming Christ’s death until He comes again, declaring that His sacrifice is sufficient and His return is certain.
Say This Prayer
Father, thank You for the gift of communion and for what it represents. Thank You that Jesus gave His body to be broken and His blood to be shed so that I could have forgiveness, life, and a relationship with You. As I prepare to take communion, help me to approach it with reverence and understanding, not as an empty ritual but as genuine participation in what Christ accomplished.
Search my heart and show me any sin I need to confess. Help me to examine myself honestly and to come to the table with genuine repentance and faith. Let communion be a reminder of how much You love me, of the price that was paid for my redemption, and of the new covenant established through Christ’s blood.
As I take the bread, help me to remember His body broken for me. As I drink the cup, help me to remember His blood poured out for the forgiveness of my sins. Unite me with other believers as we share this meal, and help me to live in light of what this represents. May I proclaim Your death until You come again, and may communion transform how I think, how I live, and how I love.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
