Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About True Love
True love is fundamentally about action, not just emotion. First John 3:18 says love with actions and in truth, not just words and speech. Jesus demonstrated this perfectly: He didn’t just say He loved us; He laid down His life. True love sacrifices for the good of the other. It gives when it costs something. It serves when it’s inconvenient. It forgives when holding a grudge would feel justified. This kind of love doesn’t come from human willpower; it flows from God’s Spirit, producing His fruit in you.
Notice that God is love, not that He has love. Love is His essential nature. Everything He does flows from love, even things we don’t initially understand as loving. He disciplines because He loves. He allows suffering because He loves. He sets boundaries because He loves. His love isn’t soft sentimentality that avoids discomfort; it’s committed action toward our ultimate good, even when we can’t see how the immediate circumstances benefit us.
The mark of genuine Christianity is love for one another. Jesus said the world will know you’re His disciples by your love.
