Your life is a constant competition for first place. Work demands come first. Family needs come first. Financial security comes first. Your health comes first. Social obligations come first. Everyone and everything is screaming for top priority, and you’re exhausted trying to keep all these plates spinning while feeling like you’re failing at everything simultaneously. Meanwhile, time with God gets squeezed into whatever’s left over, which is usually nothing.
The idea of seeking God first sounds nice in theory, but practically impossible when you’re drowning in real responsibilities that can’t wait. Your boss won’t accept “I was spending time with God” as an excuse for missing deadlines. Your kids need to eat today, not after you’ve had your quiet time. Bills are due regardless of your spiritual priorities. So “seek first the kingdom of God” feels like advice for people who don’t live in the real world with real pressure and real consequences.
But here’s what Scripture actually promises: when God gets first place, everything else falls into proper order. Not that problems disappear, but that you stop trying to manage your life in your own strength and start operating from a place of divine provision and wisdom.

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Seeking God First
Seeking God first isn’t about adding another item to your already overwhelming to-do list. It’s about reordering your entire life around a different center of gravity. When God is actually first, decisions get simpler because you’re filtering everything through one question: Does this align with seeking His kingdom and righteousness? That clarity cuts through so much noise.
The promise attached to seeking God first is that everything else will be added to you. Not that you’ll get everything you want, but that your actual needs will be met as you pursue what matters most. It’s counterintuitive, but it works. When you stop trying to secure your own life through frantic effort and instead invest your energy in knowing God and doing what He says, provision follows. It’s not magic; it’s reorienting your priorities around Someone who actually knows what you need better than you do.
The challenge is that seeking God first requires you to trust Him with outcomes you can’t control. You have to believe that time spent with Him isn’t wasted time, that obedience won’t leave you worse off, that His ways actually lead somewhere better than your carefully constructed plans.
Say This Prayer
Father, I confess that You’re not first in my life most of the time. I say You are, but my schedule, my energy, and my actual priorities tell a different story. Everything else crowds You out because those things feel more urgent, more pressing, more immediately necessary. Help me to reorder my life around seeking You first, not just in theory but in my actual daily decisions.
Show me what it practically looks like to seek Your kingdom and righteousness before I seek solutions to my problems, before I chase financial security, before I try to control outcomes I’m afraid of. Teach me to start my day with You, to bring decisions to You before I make them, to filter opportunities through what aligns with Your purposes instead of just what benefits me.
Give me the faith to believe that when I put You first, You really will take care of everything else. Help me to trust You with the outcomes I can’t control and to stop trying to secure my own life through my own effort. Let seeking You become the most natural, most necessary part of my day, not another obligation but the thing everything else flows from.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
