Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Respect In Marriage
Respect in marriage isn’t about agreeing with everything your spouse says or never having conflicts. It’s about how you disagree, how you speak about them to others, and whether you treat them with honor even when you’re frustrated. The consistent pattern in Scripture is clear: husbands are commanded to love sacrificially, and wives are commanded to respect. Both are called to submit to one another, honor one another, and build each other up instead of tearing each other down.
What destroys respect is contempt. When you start viewing your spouse with disdain, speaking to them harshly, dismissing their opinions, or mocking them publicly, you’re demolishing the foundation your marriage stands on.
Respect is rebuilt through intentional choices: speaking kindly even when you’re angry, honoring them in front of others, valuing their perspective even when you disagree, and treating them like the partner God called them to be. When respect is present, love flourishes. When it’s absent, everything else crumbles. Your marriage can survive conflict, financial stress, and many other challenges.
