Your marriage doesn’t feel like the partnership you thought it would be. Instead of unity, there’s division. Instead of pulling together, you’re pulling apart. You’re living like roommates instead of lovers, making decisions separately instead of together, and protecting your own interests instead of working for your shared good. The connection that brought you together is fraying, and you’re starting to wonder if you’ll ever get back to being truly united.
Unity in marriage isn’t automatic just because you said vows. It’s built through intentional choices, sacrificial love, mutual respect, and keeping God at the center.
These verses reveal God’s design for marriage as a profound union where two become one, where love is patient and sacrificial, and where unity is stronger than any force trying to divide you.
Your marriage can experience the oneness God intended, but it requires both of you choosing each other, serving each other, and submitting to God together. Unity is possible when you stop fighting each other and start fighting for each other.

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Marriage And Unity
God’s design for marriage is profound: two people becoming one flesh, three strands woven together so tightly they can’t be broken. But that unity doesn’t happen by accident. It requires intentional choices every day to put your spouse’s needs alongside your own, to communicate honestly, to forgive quickly, and to keep God at the center, holding it all together. When selfishness, pride, or independence creep in, unity fractures.
What stands out in Scripture is the mutual nature of biblical marriage. Husbands are called to sacrificial love. Wives are called to respect. Both are called to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Unity isn’t one person dominating while the other disappears. It’s two people working together, serving each other, protecting what they’ve built, and refusing to let anything divide them.
The strongest marriages aren’t those without problems. They’re those where both people keep choosing unity over division, forgiveness over resentment, and partnership over independence. When God is the third strand in your marriage, and both of you are holding tightly to Him, you’ll find yourselves drawn closer to each other.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, we need Your help to experience the unity You designed for our marriage. We’ve been pulling apart instead of pulling together, protecting ourselves instead of serving each other, and living like individuals instead of like one flesh. Forgive us for the ways we’ve damaged our unity.
Help us to see each other the way You see us. Give us love that’s patient, kind, and sacrificial. Teach us to communicate honestly, forgive quickly, and choose each other even when it’s hard. Show us where we’ve been selfish, prideful, or stubborn, and help us to humble ourselves.
Make us partners in every sense, working together toward shared goals, supporting each other through challenges, and celebrating each other’s victories. Help us to submit to one another out of reverence for You, to honor each other above ourselves, and to protect what we’ve built.
Be the third strand in our marriage that holds us together when everything else tries to pull us apart. Unite our hearts, align our goals, and strengthen our commitment to each other and to You.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
