Letting go is one of life’s most difficult yet necessary skills, requiring us to release our grip on things, people, or circumstances that we desperately want to hold onto but can no longer control. Whether you’re struggling to forgive someone who deeply wounded you, trying to let go of something you can’t control, trying to move past a failed relationship or lost opportunity, clinging to unfulfilled dreams that need to be surrendered, or wrestling with bitterness over injustices that can’t be undone, the process of letting go can feel like losing pieces of yourself.
Our human nature fights against letting go because it feels like giving up, admitting defeat, or allowing others to “win” after they’ve hurt us. We may hold onto anger because it feels like power, cling to past hurts because they’ve become part of our identity, or refuse to release control because uncertainty terrifies us more than the pain of staying stuck. Sometimes we know we need to let go but don’t know how, while other times we’re not even sure what we’re holding onto so tightly that keeps us trapped in cycles of resentment, regret, or fear.
These verses provide biblical wisdom for the sacred act of release, showing us how letting go creates space for God’s healing, new opportunities, and the freedom that comes from trusting His sovereignty over our lives.

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Letting Go and Moving On
Scripture consistently presents letting go not as passive resignation but as an active choice to trust God’s sovereignty and goodness even when we can’t understand His ways. The Bible shows that holding onto past hurts, failed dreams, or attempts to control outcomes that belong to God ultimately imprisons us and prevents us from experiencing the freedom and new opportunities He wants to provide. Throughout Scripture, we see people who had to release their grip on what they thought they needed in order to receive what God actually had planned for them.
What strikes me most about the biblical approach to letting go is how it balances honest acknowledgment of pain with confident hope in God’s ability to redeem even our worst experiences. Scripture doesn’t minimize the difficulty of releasing control or forgiving deep wounds, but it consistently shows that God can bring beauty from ashes and purpose from pain when we’re willing to surrender our right to revenge, control, or self-pity.
The Bible also reveals that letting go is often a process rather than a one-time decision, requiring us to repeatedly choose forgiveness, trust, and forward movement whenever old hurts or fears try to reclaim our attention. Scripture teaches that true freedom comes not from getting what we want but from surrendering our will to God’s perfect plan, trusting that His ways are higher than ours and that He works all things together for good for those who love Him.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come to You carrying burdens that I’ve held onto far too long, clinging to hurts, disappointments, and attempts to control things that were never mine to control. Help me to recognize what I need to let go of and give me the courage to release my tight grip on these things that are keeping me trapped in the past.
Show me where I’ve been holding onto unforgiveness, bitterness, or resentment that is poisoning my heart and preventing me from moving forward. Help me to forgive, not because others deserve it, but because You have forgiven me and because holding onto anger is hurting me more than anyone else.
When I’m afraid to let go because I don’t know what comes next, remind me that Your plans for me are good and that You can be trusted with my future. Help me to surrender my need to understand everything and instead rest in Your perfect wisdom and timing.
Give me the strength to release past failures, missed opportunities, and broken dreams that I keep rehearsing in my mind. Help me to learn from the past without being imprisoned by it, and to embrace the new things You want to do in my life.
Fill the empty spaces that letting go creates with Your peace, hope, and excitement about the future You have planned. Help me to walk in the freedom that comes from trusting You completely.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
