Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Kindness And Mercy
Kindness and mercy are revolutionary in a world obsessed with justice, fairness, and getting what you deserve. They don’t make sense from a human perspective.
Why show kindness to someone who doesn’t deserve it?
Why extend mercy to someone who hasn’t earned it?
Because that’s exactly what God does for us. We didn’t deserve His kindness. We couldn’t earn His mercy. Yet He lavished both on us while we were still sinners, still broken, still failing.
The beautiful thing about kindness and mercy is that they have power beyond their moment. A single act of kindness can change someone’s entire day, sometimes their entire trajectory. Mercy given when judgment was deserved can break through walls that years of condemnation couldn’t touch.
Romans 2:4 says God’s kindness leads people to repentance, not His harshness. When you show undeserved kindness and unearned mercy, you’re reflecting God’s character in ways that pointing out someone’s failures never could. The world needs fewer critics and more people who choose compassion over condemnation.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me kindness when I didn’t deserve it and mercy when I deserved judgment. Your compassion toward me is new every morning, and Your patience with my failures is beyond what I can comprehend. Help me to extend that same kindness and mercy to others.
Soften my heart toward people who are struggling, failing, or hurting. Help me to respond with compassion instead of criticism, mercy instead of judgment, and kindness instead of harshness. Give me eyes to see opportunities to refresh others the way You’ve refreshed me.
Produce in me the fruit of kindness that only comes from Your Spirit. Help me to speak gracious words that heal instead of harsh words that wound. Teach me to show mercy to those who don’t deserve it, remembering how much mercy You’ve shown me.
Make me quick to show compassion and slow to pass judgment. Use my kindness and mercy to point people to You and to create space for healing in relationships that have been damaged by cruelty.
