There is something unique about praying for a sibling.
You may have grown up in the same home, shared the same parents, argued over the same small things, celebrated milestones together, and watched one another become adults.
Yet with time, life can take siblings in very different directions.
One may be building a career. Another may be raising children.
One may be walking closely with God. Another may be struggling with faith.
A brother may be facing financial pressure. A sister may be carrying a private burden.
Sometimes siblings live in different cities or countries and become less involved in one another’s daily lives.
Still, the bond remains.
You may not be able to solve everything happening in your brother’s or sister’s life, but you can bring them before God.
You can pray for their protection, health, relationships, decisions, spiritual growth, work, finances, and future.
You can also pray when your relationship with a sibling is complicated.
Prayer does not require you to pretend that everything is fine.
It gives you a way to place your love, concern, gratitude, frustration, and hope before God.
Why Should I Pray for My Siblings?
Siblings need prayer for the same reason everyone does: they are living through circumstances you cannot see or control.
You may know your brother well and still not know everything he is carrying. You may speak with your sister regularly and still be unaware of a private fear or difficult decision.
God sees what you cannot.
Paul’s words to the church in Philippi show how naturally prayer and affection can exist together:
“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.”
Philippians 1:3-4, NIV
There is something beautiful about that kind of prayer. Paul did not merely pray because people were in trouble. He prayed because he remembered them.
You can do the same with your siblings.
Thank God for who they are. Thank Him for their lives, gifts, growth, and the ways they have been a blessing to you. Then bring their current needs before Him.
A Prayer for My Siblings
Father, I bring my siblings before You today. You know each of them completely, including the things they share with others and the burdens they keep private.
Please watch over them wherever they are. Protect them from danger, guide their decisions, and give them wisdom for the choices ahead.
Provide what they need and help them use what they have responsibly. Give them strength when life becomes difficult and peace when they are troubled.
Guard their health, their relationships, their work, and their minds. Keep them from people and situations that would lead them away from what is good.
Where they have made mistakes, give them humility to recognize them and courage to make things right. Where they are hurting, bring healing and the right support.
Above all, draw each of us closer to You. Help our family remain connected by love, patience, forgiveness, and grace.
Thank You for giving me these people to call my siblings. Keep them in Your care, today and always. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Pray for Your Brother’s Direction and Strength
A brother may be facing pressures he does not openly discuss.
Perhaps he is trying to establish himself professionally, provide for a family, make an important decision, recover from a mistake, or figure out what direction his life should take.
You do not need to know every detail before you pray.
Ask God to give him wisdom.
“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”
Psalm 143:10, NIV
This is a prayer worth praying over your brother because direction involves more than getting the outcome we want.
Sometimes we ask God to open a particular door because we believe it is best. But God may know that another door is better. Pray, therefore, not simply that your brother will get what he wants, but that he will become wise enough to recognize what is right.
Ask God to protect him from reckless decisions, unhealthy relationships, dishonest opportunities, and pride.
Pray that he will have the courage to walk away from something that looks attractive but would ultimately harm him.
And if he is struggling, pray that he will not interpret asking for help as weakness.
A Short Prayer for My Brother
Lord, I place my brother in Your hands. Give him wisdom for every decision before him and strength for every responsibility he carries.
Protect him from choices made through fear, pride, anger, or pressure. Guide his work, relationships, finances, and plans for the future.
Give him good judgment and people around him who will tell him the truth with love. When he succeeds, keep him humble.
When he fails, help him learn without becoming discouraged. Heal anything in his heart that he has been carrying alone.
Draw him closer to You and help him become the man You are calling him to be. Amen.
Pray for Your Sister’s Peace and Protection
A sister may carry pressures that are visible or completely hidden.
You may be praying for her marriage, children, career, health, friendships, finances, or emotional wellbeing. Perhaps she is beginning a new chapter of life and needs wisdom. Perhaps she has been hurt by someone she trusted.
Whatever the situation, pray for her as a whole person.
Do not reduce your prayer to one problem.
Ask God to give her discernment about the people she allows close to her. Pray for courage to establish healthy boundaries when necessary. Ask Him to protect her from manipulation, exploitation, and relationships that consistently produce harm.
Pray for her confidence to be rooted in God rather than in approval from other people.
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
Proverbs 31:25, NIV
This is not a demand that your sister always appear strong.
She may have days when she feels exhausted. She may need help. She may be uncertain about the future.
Pray that God will meet her in those places too.
A Short Prayer for My Sister
Father, I commit my sister to Your care. Protect her wherever she goes and give her wisdom about the people and opportunities she allows into her life.
Strengthen her when she feels tired, encourage her when she is discouraged, and give her peace when she is uncertain about the future.
Guard her health, her relationships, her work, and her heart. Give her courage to walk away from what is harmful and wisdom to recognize what is good.
Heal the wounds she may not know how to express. Remind her that her worth does not depend on anyone’s approval.
Draw her closer to You and surround her with people who genuinely want what is best for her. Amen.
Pray for Your Siblings’ Faith
One of the deepest concerns you may have for a sibling is their relationship with God.
Perhaps you grew up believing together, but one of your siblings has gradually become distant from faith. Maybe they are questioning Christianity. Perhaps they believe but have become discouraged by something they experienced.
You cannot force spiritual growth.
But you can pray.
Ask God to meet your sibling personally. Pray that they will encounter truth without manipulation and grace without condemnation. Ask God to bring trustworthy Christian influences into their life.
If your sibling already follows Christ, pray that their faith will become deeper and more resilient.
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you.”
Ephesians 1:18, NIV
That is a beautiful prayer because it focuses on knowing God rather than merely changing outward behavior.
And remember that your relationship with your sibling matters too.
If every conversation becomes an attempt to correct their faith, they may stop feeling safe enough to talk honestly with you. Sometimes your patient love, integrity, humility, and willingness to listen create opportunities for conversations that pressure never could.
Pray for Sibling Relationships and Family Unity
Not every sibling relationship remains close.
Old arguments can become permanent walls. Money can create resentment. Inheritance can divide families. Different personalities can create constant friction. Marriage can change family dynamics. A disagreement that began years ago can continue affecting people who barely remember how it started.
If you are praying for reconciliation among siblings, ask God to work on everyone’s heart, including yours.
“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
Ephesians 4:2-3, NIV
Notice the qualities Paul names: humility, gentleness, patience, and love.
Reconciliation usually requires more than one emotional conversation. Sometimes it requires an apology. Sometimes it requires a difficult acknowledgment of wrongdoing. Sometimes it requires time.
And sometimes reconciliation is not immediately possible because another person is unwilling to participate or because contact would be unsafe.
You can pursue peace without pretending that boundaries do not matter.
Pray for wisdom about what your next step should be.
When You Are Worried About a Sibling
There are times when concern becomes difficult to turn off.
You may know that your brother is making decisions that could hurt him. You may be concerned about your sister’s health. You may be worried because a sibling has stopped communicating normally.
The temptation is to believe that worrying harder will somehow protect them.
It will not.
Jesus asked a pointed question about anxiety:
“Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
Matthew 6:27, NIV
That does not mean your concerns are unimportant.
It means worry is not the same thing as responsibility.
If there is something practical you can do, do it. Call your sibling. Check on them. Offer help. Encourage appropriate professional assistance when the situation requires it.
Then pray.
You can care deeply without believing that you must control the outcome.
A Prayer When I Am Worried About My Sibling
Lord, You know why I am worried about my sibling. I can see some of what is happening, but You see everything.
Please protect them where I cannot. Give them wisdom where they are uncertain and strength where they feel overwhelmed.
If there is something I should do, make it clear and give me the courage to act wisely. Keep me from trying to control what belongs in Your hands.
Guard my heart from constant fear and help me trust You without becoming passive. Bring the right people into my sibling’s life and provide the help they need.
Give me patience when I cannot see immediate change. Most of all, remind me that You love my sibling even more than I do. Amen.
Pray for Siblings Who Are Going Through Hard Times
Hard seasons can look different from one person to another.
One sibling may be grieving. Another may be struggling financially. Someone may be dealing with a broken relationship. Another may be searching for work or trying to recover from a serious mistake.
You can pray for God’s provision without assuming that provision always means receiving exactly what someone wants.
Sometimes provision comes through employment. Sometimes through family support. Sometimes through wise counsel. Sometimes through an unexpected opportunity. Sometimes God gives the strength to endure a season before circumstances change.
Paul learned to trust God in both abundance and need.
“I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”
Philippians 4:11, NIV
Pray that your sibling will have what they need for the season they are in.
Ask God for practical wisdom, perseverance, trustworthy relationships, and opportunities to move forward.
And if you are able to help in a responsible way, consider whether your prayer should also lead to action.
Pray for Your Siblings’ Health
Physical health is another important part of praying for your family.
If your sibling is sick, pray for healing and strength. Ask God to guide doctors and other healthcare professionals, provide accurate diagnoses, and give wisdom about treatment.
If your sibling is healthy, pray for continued wellbeing and wise choices.
“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
3 John 1:2, NIV
Prayer should accompany appropriate medical care rather than replace it.
If a sibling has concerning symptoms, encourage them to seek qualified medical attention. If they are dealing with a mental health crisis, serious illness, addiction, or another complex situation, prayer can be part of the support they receive, but it should not be the only support.
Loving someone means being willing to help them access the care they need.
When You and Your Sibling Are Far Apart
Distance can make family relationships harder.
You may live in different cities or countries. You may not know what an ordinary Tuesday looks like for your sibling anymore. You may only speak occasionally.
Prayer can bridge some of that distance.
You can pray for their commute even when you cannot travel with them. You can pray for their workplace even though you have never seen it. You can ask God to protect their home, guide their decisions, and strengthen their faith even when you cannot physically be there.
And when possible, combine prayer with connection.
Send a message.
Make the call.
Remember their birthday.
Ask how they are doing and actually listen to the answer.
A short conversation can communicate something prayer alone cannot: “I am still here, and I care about you.”
Frequently Asked Questions About Praying for Siblings
What is a good Bible verse to pray over my siblings?
Philippians 1:3-4 is a beautiful starting point because it expresses gratitude and prayer for people you love. You can also pray through Ephesians 1:17-19 for spiritual wisdom, Numbers 6:24-26 for God’s blessing and peace, and Psalm 121 for protection.
How do I pray for a sibling who is making bad decisions?
Ask God to give your sibling wisdom, conviction, humility, and good influences. If their decisions are causing serious harm, consider whether a loving and honest conversation is necessary. Prayer should not prevent you from taking reasonable action when someone’s safety is at risk.
How can I pray for a brother or sister who does not believe in God?
Pray that God will draw them toward truth and give them opportunities to encounter the gospel in healthy ways. Ask for wisdom in your own conversations with them. Avoid treating prayer as a tool for controlling them. Love them genuinely while entrusting their spiritual journey to God.
Should I pray for a sibling who has hurt me?
Yes, but prayer does not mean denying the hurt. You can ask God to work in their life while also asking Him to heal your own heart and give you wisdom about forgiveness, reconciliation, and boundaries.
What if my sibling does not want my help?
You may not be able to make them accept your advice or assistance. Respect appropriate boundaries while continuing to pray. If there is an immediate threat to their safety, however, seek appropriate help rather than assuming prayer alone is sufficient.
Keep Your Siblings Before God
Your siblings will make decisions you cannot make for them.
They will experience opportunities you cannot control. They may make mistakes you wish they had avoided. They may walk through seasons of sickness, uncertainty, success, disappointment, marriage, parenthood, grief, or change.
You cannot follow them through every part of life.
But you can pray.
Pray when things are going well, not only when something has gone wrong. Thank God for your siblings by name. Ask Him to protect them and give them wisdom. Pray for your brother’s direction and your sister’s peace. Pray for their health, relationships, work, finances, and spiritual growth.
If there is conflict between you, ask God to show you what you can do without pretending that reconciliation is entirely within your control.
And when you are tempted to carry your sibling’s problems as though their entire future depends on you, surrender that responsibility to God.
Your love for your brother or sister is real.
So is God’s care for them.
Keep loving them. Keep praying for them. Help when you can. Speak honestly when necessary. Listen when they need someone to listen. And trust God with the parts of their lives that you cannot reach.
