Spiritual growth operates by laws entirely different from physical development. A child doesn’t need to try growing taller. Feed them, let them sleep, and biology handles the rest. But spiritual maturity doesn’t happen through passive existence or mere passage of time. You can sit in church for decades and remain spiritually stunted. You can read Scripture daily yet never progress beyond infancy in your understanding of God.
Growth requires intentionality that many mistake for effort. It’s not striving to become something through sheer willpower. It’s positioning yourself where growth naturally occurs. Plants don’t strain to grow. They simply stay rooted in soil, turned toward light, absorbing what they need. Growth becomes inevitable when the conditions are right.
Spiritual growth follows similar patterns. You don’t manufacture maturity. You create conditions where it flourishes. You root yourself in God’s Word. You turn toward His presence. You absorb truth that transforms from the inside out. You prune what chokes spiritual vitality. You endure seasons that seem like death but are actually producing deeper roots.
The tragedy is how many people settle for spiritual childhood when God offers maturity. They’re content with milk when they should be eating solid food. Comfortable with elementary teachings when they should be wrestling with deeper truths. Satisfied with secondhand faith when God invites a direct, transformative encounter.

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Growing Spiritually
Spiritual growth isn’t automatic. You can be saved for decades and remain spiritually immature if you’re not intentional about growth. Scripture calls out believers who should be teachers but still need someone to explain basic truths. They’re stuck on milk when they should be eating solid food.
Growth requires both divine work and human cooperation. God makes things grow, but you position yourself where growth happens. You stay rooted in His Word. You remain connected to the vine. You let trials produce perseverance that leads to maturity. You add to your faith goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love.
The goal isn’t perfection in this life. It’s progress. Moving forward. Becoming more like Christ with ever-increasing glory. Being transformed by the renewing of your mind. Putting off the old self and putting on the new. This happens gradually, sometimes imperceptibly, until you look back and realize you’re not who you used to be.
Spiritual maturity shows in how you respond to trials, how you love difficult people, and how you trust God when circumstances contradict His promises. It’s less about knowledge and more about Christ-like character producing fruit that lasts.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, I don’t want to stay spiritually immature. I want to grow in grace and knowledge of You.
I’ve been content with spiritual childhood for too long. I’ve stayed on milk when I should be eating solid food. I’ve settled for secondhand faith when You offer a direct encounter. Forgive me for being satisfied with spiritual mediocrity when You call me to maturity.
Help me to grow. Root me deeply in Your Word so I draw constant nourishment. Keep me connected to the vine so I bear lasting fruit. Transform me by renewing my mind. Make me more like Christ with ever-increasing glory.
