Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Love In Marriage
Love in marriage isn’t sustained by feelings alone. Feelings change with circumstances, hormones, stress levels, and a thousand other variables. The love that lasts is built on covenant commitment, daily choices, and sacrificial actions, regardless of how you feel in the moment.
Ephesians 5 gives the blueprint: husbands love like Christ loved the church, which means sacrificially, protectively, and consistently. That’s not based on whether your wife deserves it today. It’s based on your commitment to reflect Christ’s character.
The consistent pattern in Scripture is that love in marriage requires intentionality. It doesn’t happen automatically just because you said vows. You have to choose your spouse daily, serve them when it’s inconvenient, forgive them repeatedly, and invest in the relationship even when you’re tired.
What’s also clear is that love in marriage should be both spiritual and physical. Song of Solomon celebrates physical attraction and intimacy without shame. Proverbs encourages rejoicing in your spouse. The Bible doesn’t separate romantic love from covenant commitment. It integrates them.

Heavenly Father, my marriage needs Your help. The love I once felt so strongly has faded into routine, and I don’t know how to get it back. I need You to revive what’s dying and restore what’s been lost.
Help me to love my spouse the way You’ve loved me: sacrificially, patiently, unconditionally. Teach me to choose love as an action even when I don’t feel it as an emotion. Give me eyes to see them the way You see them, with compassion for their struggles and appreciation for their strengths.
