35 Bible Verses About Jealousy And Envy

Jealousy and envy are among the most destructive emotions, yet they’re so common that they feel almost normal. Social media has intensified these feelings exponentially, constantly showing you what others have that you don’t: their perfect relationships, successful careers, beautiful homes, exotic vacations, and seemingly effortless lives.

A 2017 study in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology found that limiting social media use to 30 minutes per day significantly reduced feelings of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and envy. The constant comparison is poisonous, yet most people can’t look away.

Jealousy and envy are closely related but distinct. Envy wants what someone else has. Jealousy fears losing what you already possess. Both stem from discontentment and comparison, measuring your life against others’ highlight reels while knowing all the behind-the-scenes struggles of your own.

Proverbs says envy rots the bones, and James warns that where you have envy and selfish ambition, you find disorder and every evil practice. These aren’t just uncomfortable feelings; they’re spiritually corrosive forces that destroy peace, poison relationships, and reveal hearts that don’t trust God’s provision and His timing.

These verses reveal that jealousy and envy are serious sins that God hates, that they lead to destructive behavior, and that contentment and trust in God are the antidotes.

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Jealousy And Envy

Jealousy and envy are fundamentally about comparison and discontentment with God’s provision. When you envy what someone else has, you’re saying God hasn’t given you enough or hasn’t been fair. You’re measuring your life against theirs and concluding you got shortchanged.

But comparison is a trap because you’re comparing your behind-the-scenes reality to their highlight reel. You see their success but not their struggles, their blessings but not their burdens. Envy always distorts because it’s based on incomplete information.

The consequences of jealousy and envy are devastating. Cain’s envy of his brother (Abel) led to the first murder. Saul’s jealousy of David consumed him and drove him to madness. The religious leaders’ envy of Jesus led them to crucify Him.

James says where there’s envy, there’s disorder and every evil practice. It’s not just an uncomfortable feeling; it’s a gateway to all kinds of destructive behavior. Envy poisons relationships, destroys peace, and leads people to do things they’d never otherwise consider.

The antidote to envy is contentment and gratitude and thanksgiving for what God has given you. When you’re genuinely grateful for your own blessings, you can celebrate others’ without feeling diminished.

When you trust that God’s provision and His timing are perfect for you, you don’t need to covet what He’s given someone else. Biblical contentment doesn’t mean having no desires or ambitions; it means finding satisfaction in God rather than in having what others have. Gratitude for your portion destroys envy’s power over your heart.

Say This Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess that jealousy and envy have too much power in my heart. I compare my life to others and feel cheated when they have what I want. I struggle to celebrate others’ success without feeling diminished by it. Forgive me for the discontentment and distrust in Your provision that jealousy reveals.

Break the power of comparison in my life. Help me to see that I’m measuring my behind-the-scenes reality against others’ highlight reels, which always distorts the truth. Teach me to be genuinely grateful for what You’ve given me rather than obsessing over what You’ve given others.

Give me contentment that finds satisfaction in You rather than in having what others possess. Help me to trust that Your provision and timing are perfect for me, even when it looks different from what You’ve given someone else. Let me celebrate others’ blessings without feeling like their gain is my loss.

Rid me of all envy, malice, and jealousy. Replace them with love that doesn’t envy, gratitude for my own portion, and trust that You will provide everything I truly need. Help me to be zealous for You rather than envious of others.

In Jesus’s sufficient Name, Amen.
