You’re trying to manufacture character traits that only God can produce. You’re working on being more patient, but you keep snapping at people. You’re trying to be more loving, but resentment keeps creeping back in. You want more self-control and discipline, but you keep giving in to the same temptations. The harder you try to be good, kind, faithful, gentle, joyful, peaceful, and patient through sheer willpower, the more exhausted and defeated you feel. You know what your life should look like, but you can’t seem to get there on your own.
That’s because you’re not supposed to. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control aren’t achievements you earn through effort. They’re fruit that grows when you’re connected to the Vine.
These verses show that the Holy Spirit produces in you what you could never produce yourself, that spiritual fruit comes from abiding in God’s presence, and that the character you’re striving for flows naturally when you surrender control to Him. Stop trying to grow fruit. Start staying connected to the source.

Additional Fruits By The Catholic Tradition
The Catholic tradition, drawing from the Latin Vulgate translation and Church teachings, has historically identified twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit rather than nine. To the nine fruits explicitly listed in Galatians 5:22-23, Catholic theology adds three more: generosity, modesty, and chastity.
These additional fruits aren’t meant to contradict Scripture but to expand on the evidence of the Spirit’s work in a believer’s life, emphasizing virtues that flow naturally from the primary nine. Generosity reflects the Spirit’s work in making us freely give to others.
Modesty speaks to humility in how we present ourselves. Chastity addresses purity in our relationships and desires. While Protestant traditions typically focus on the nine fruits directly mentioned in Galatians, both approaches point to the same truth: the Holy Spirit transforms our character in ways we could never accomplish on our own.
Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About The Fruits of The Holy Spirit
The fruit of the Spirit isn’t a checklist you work through until you’ve mastered all nine qualities. It’s evidence that God’s Spirit is living in you and changing you from the inside out.
You can’t manufacture love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, or self-control through effort or discipline. These qualities are supernatural. They’re produced when you stay connected to Jesus, walk by the Spirit, and surrender control of your life to God.
What’s striking is that these aren’t optional characteristics for some Christians. They’re what should naturally grow in every believer who’s abiding in Christ. If your life isn’t producing this fruit, the issue isn’t that you need to try harder. It’s that you need to get closer to the source.
A branch doesn’t strain to produce fruit. It just stays connected to the vine, receives nourishment, and fruit appears. That’s how spiritual growth works, too. Your job is to abide. God’s job is to produce. When you stop trying to be good and start staying close to the One who is good, His character starts showing up in your life naturally.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, I’ve been trying to produce fruit through my own effort, and it’s exhausting. I can’t manufacture love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, or self-control on my own. I need Your Spirit to produce in me what I could never create myself.
Help me to abide in You like a branch stays connected to the vine. Teach me what it means to walk by Your Spirit instead of striving in my own strength. Show me the areas where I’m trying to be good instead of staying close to You.
Produce Your fruit in my life. Give me supernatural love for difficult people, joy in hard circumstances, peace when everything’s chaotic, patience when I want to quit, kindness when cruelty would be easier, goodness that reflects Your character, faithfulness in the small things, gentleness with those who are hurting, and self-control over my impulses.
I surrender my character to You. Change me from the inside out. Make my life evidence that Your Spirit lives in me.
In Jesus’ Fruitful Name, Amen.
