The world we live in is beautiful and broken at the same time. We catch glimpses of how things were meant to be in moments of breathtaking beauty, genuine love, and perfect peace, but these moments are constantly interrupted by pain, conflict, and death. It wasn’t always this way, and it won’t always be this way. Understanding God’s original design helps us make sense of both the goodness we still see and the brokenness we constantly experience.
Before sin entered the world, everything functioned according to God’s perfect plan. Humanity lived in unbroken fellowship with God, relationships were pure and shame-free, work was fulfilling rather than frustrating, and creation itself existed in perfect harmony. The story of creation in Genesis isn’t just ancient history; it’s a window into God’s heart and His intentions for everything He made.
These verses reveal what God intended from the beginning: His design for humanity, marriage, work, rest, community, and our relationship with Him and His creation. They help us understand not just what was lost in the fall but also what God is restoring through Christ and what will be fully realized when He makes all things new.

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About God’s Original Design
Understanding God’s original design does more than satisfy historical curiosity; it gives us a framework for understanding ourselves, our purpose, and what redemption actually means. When we read Genesis 1-2, we’re seeing God’s intentions before sin corrupted everything. Humanity was created for an intimate relationship with God, meaningful work, deep community without shame, and stewardship over creation. Marriage was designed as a lifelong covenant reflecting God’s relationship with His people. Even rest was built into the rhythm of creation itself.
What’s both heartbreaking and hopeful is realizing how far we’ve fallen from that design and how much Christ came to restore. The gospel isn’t just about forgiveness; it’s about God recreating what was broken. When Paul talks about becoming a new creation in Christ, he’s connecting salvation to God’s original creative work. We’re being restored to what we were always meant to be.
The glimpses of restored creation in Revelation echo Eden’s perfection but with something even better: redeemed humanity in eternal, unbroken fellowship with God. The new creation won’t just restore what was lost; it will fulfill what was always intended.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for creating everything with purpose and design. When I look at the world, I see both the beauty of Your original creation and the brokenness that sin introduced. Help me to understand what You intended from the beginning so I can better appreciate what You’re restoring through Christ.
Thank You for creating me in Your image with dignity, purpose, and value. When I struggle with identity or worth, remind me that I’m Your handiwork, created for good works You prepared in advance. Help me to live according to Your design rather than settling for the world’s broken alternatives.
Show me areas of my life where I’ve drifted from Your original intentions, whether in relationships, work, rest, or how I view myself and others. Give me grace to align my life with Your design, trusting that Your ways are better than my own preferences.
I look forward to the day when You make all things new, when creation is fully restored, and we experience unbroken fellowship with You forever. Until then, help me to reflect Your original design in how I live.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
