Love seems to be the most desired and elusive human experience, driving our deepest longings while often leaving us disappointed by relationships that promise more than they deliver. We search for someone who will love us unconditionally, struggle to love others when they hurt or fail us, and wonder if we’re truly lovable when past relationships have ended in rejection or betrayal. The Hollywood version of love feels shallow compared to the profound connection our hearts crave, yet genuine love often requires sacrifice and commitment that feels beyond our capabilities.
Love touches every aspect of human existence, from romantic relationships and family bonds to friendships and our relationship with God. We long to be known completely and loved anyway, to find someone worth laying down our lives for, and to experience the security that comes from being cherished by another person. Yet love also exposes our deepest vulnerabilities, requiring us to risk hurt, practice forgiveness, and choose commitment even when emotions fluctuate.
If you’re seeking to understand love more deeply, whether you’re longing to find it, struggling to give it, or trying to heal from love that has wounded you, Scripture offers the most profound insights into love’s true nature. The Bible reveals that love originates from God himself and provides both the model and the power for the kind of love that satisfies our deepest needs and transforms our relationships.

Our Thoughts On What the Bible Says About Love
Scripture reveals that love is not merely an emotion or feeling but the very essence of God’s character, with the profound declaration that “God is love” establishing love as the fundamental reality underlying all existence. The Bible presents love not as a human sentiment that fluctuates with circumstances but as a divine nature that remains constant and sacrificial, demonstrated most clearly through Christ’s death on our behalf while we were still sinners.
What strikes me most about biblical teaching on love is how it redefines love as action rather than just feeling, commitment rather than just attraction. The famous “love chapter” in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes love through verbs rather than emotions, showing that biblical love is something we do rather than something we merely experience. This transforms our understanding of love from a feeling that may come and go to a choice that can be made consistently regardless of emotions.
The Bible also reveals that human love finds its source and power in God’s love for us, with the principle that “we love because he first loved us,” showing that authentic love flows from experiencing divine love rather than from human willpower. This suggests that the key to loving others well isn’t trying harder to be loving but receiving more deeply the love that God has already poured out for us, allowing that divine love to overflow naturally into our relationships with others.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are love itself and that You have loved me with an everlasting, unconditional love that I could never earn or lose. Help me to receive Your love more deeply so that it can transform how I love others and how I understand my own worth and identity.
Teach me to love as You love, not based on feelings that fluctuate but on commitment that endures. Help me to be patient and kind, to not be envious or boastful, to not insist on my own way, or keep records of wrongs. Give me the supernatural ability to love those who are difficult to love, including family members who hurt me and people who seem unlovable.
Heal the wounds in my heart from times when love has been withheld, twisted, or used to manipulate me. Help me to forgive those who should have loved me better and to trust that Your perfect love can fill the empty places that human love has left unfulfilled.
For those I’m in a relationship with now, help me to demonstrate Your love through my actions, words, and attitude. Show me practical ways to love my spouse, children, friends, and even strangers in ways that reflect Your heart. Help me to lay down my own desires and preferences to serve others genuinely.
Most importantly, deepen my understanding of how much You love me personally. Let me never doubt that I am cherished, pursued, and delighted in by the Creator of the universe. Help this knowledge of Your love to be the foundation that makes all other love possible and meaningful.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
