Single parenting feels overwhelming on the best days and impossible on the worst ones. You’re juggling responsibilities that were designed for two people while battling exhaustion, financial strain and crisis, and the weight of making every decision alone. Maybe you’re dealing with judgment from others who don’t understand your situation, or guilt over things you can’t provide for your children. The loneliness hits hardest during school events where you’re surrounded by two-parent families, or late at night when the kids are finally asleep and the silence reminds you how alone you really are.
Society often treats single parents as broken families rather than families that are whole in a different way. You wonder if you’re enough, if your children are missing out, and if God sees your efforts when everything feels like it’s falling apart. The pressure to be both mother and father, breadwinner and nurturer, disciplinarian and comforter can leave you questioning whether you have what it takes to raise healthy, happy children on your own.
But God has a special heart for single parents and their children, and His strength is made perfect in your weakness.

Our Thoughts on What the Bible Says About Single Parents
Scripture consistently shows God’s special concern for those who are parenting alone, often grouping single parents with widows and orphans as recipients of His particular protection and provision. The Hebrew word “yatom,” meaning fatherless, appears over 40 times in the Old Testament, always in the context of God’s promise to defend and provide for those without traditional family support. This isn’t pity but recognition that single-parent families hold a special place in God’s heart and receive His focused attention.
What’s remarkable is how many biblical heroes were raised by single parents or stepped into single-parenting roles themselves. Moses was raised by his mother and later by Pharaoh’s daughter. Timothy’s faith was shaped primarily by his mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois. The widow of Zarephath trusted God’s provision for her and her son during famine. These stories demonstrate that God doesn’t just sustain single-parent families but uses them to accomplish His purposes. Your family isn’t broken or incomplete; it’s simply structured differently, and God has promised to be the father to the fatherless and the husband to the widow, filling the gaps with His presence and provision.
Say This Prayer
Heavenly Father, single parenting feels so overwhelming that some days I don’t know how I’ll make it through. The weight of being responsible for everything, from providing financially to being present emotionally, leaves me exhausted and questioning whether I’m enough for my children. I worry constantly about the things I can’t give them and whether they’re missing out because of our family situation.
Thank You for Your promise to be a father to the fatherless and to never leave or forsake us. Help me to remember that You see every struggle, every sleepless night, and every moment when I feel like I’m failing. Fill in the gaps where I fall short and provide for needs I can’t meet. Give me wisdom for the countless decisions I have to make alone, and strength for the days when everything feels impossible.
Surround my children with Your protection and love. Help them to see You as their heavenly Father who loves them unconditionally. Provide positive role models and mentors in their lives, and use our family’s unique circumstances to draw them closer to You. Give me patience when I’m at my limit and joy in the midst of the challenges. Remind me that You can use our family, just as we are, for Your glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
